What are the Best Ways to Get Around Urban Centers in Spain?

When I first arrived to Spain, my first issue was transportation.

I had no car, no wheels, and had to walk everywhere for the first week or two (minus a few taxi trips and car rentals to get stuff like Air Conditioners and stuff).

  • Bikes are extremely expensive here for some reason, and a $3/400 bike is entry level price.
  • Taxis are modestly priced and good if you have bigger items you need to haul. I suggest RADIO TAXI TORREVIEJA
  • Busses are well priced, and you can get a "Tarjeta Azul" in Torrevieja to get half-priced bus service.
  • Owning a car is expensive, and not worth it if you're just staying a few months on a budget, since there's also a lot of paperwork and government stuff needed to purchase and register.
  • Rideshare like Uber/Lyft doesn't exist in Torrevieja yet, see screenshots below.

😢

So how do you get around urban centres, for cheap?

Uber and Lyft not available...

About Quick (Short-Term) Scooter Rentals in Spain

Scooter rental services, like Hoppy, Link, or Vamoz, have become increasingly common in Spain, particularly in major cities and popular tourist destinations. Here’s an overview of the situation:

1. Major Cities: Cities like Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, and Seville have embraced the trend of electric scooter rentals. Numerous companies operate in these urban areas, providing a convenient mode of transport for both locals and tourists. Companies like Lime, Bird, and Tier, along with local operators, have a significant presence.

2. Tourist Destinations: In addition to the major cities, tourist-heavy areas such as Palma de Mallorca, Málaga, and Marbella also see a high density of rental scooters. These locations benefit from the influx of tourists looking for easy and efficient ways to explore the area.

3. Availability and Accessibility: The scooters are usually accessible through mobile apps, allowing users to locate, unlock, and pay for the scooters seamlessly. They are often found near public transport hubs, busy commercial areas, and tourist attractions.

4. Regulation and Safety: Spanish cities have implemented various regulations to ensure the safety and proper use of rental scooters. This includes designated parking zones, speed limits, and restrictions on where scooters can be ridden. Users are generally required to follow traffic rules, and helmet usage is encouraged, though not always mandatory.

5. Expansion and Popularity: The popularity of electric scooters has been growing, leading to an expansion of services. Companies continually increase their fleet sizes and operational areas in response to demand.

Which Scooter Rental in Torrevieja Offers the Best Value?

I suggest HOPPY because they have the best subscription plans, which in Torrevieja are as follows:

  • Vamoz (no subscription plan available as of the writing of this article)
  • Link / Superpedestrian: €30 for 30 rides over 30 days, 15 minutes maximum each ride.
  • Hoppy: €35 for 3 rides per day, for 30 days, up to 60 minutes per day. €1 extra per unlock each day, AND you can PAUSE a ride for €0.05 per minute, up to 60 minutes.

So as you can see, from all the available options, the best value is Hoppy, AND they have the most locations, compared to everyone else. See screenshots below.

LINK / SUPERPEDESTRIAN Scooter Availability (not as slim, but still slim compared to Hoppy)

Conclusion and Recommendations

So my suggestion would be to go with Hoppy, but hey, whatever floats your boat. You might not appreciate the value of a Hoppy subscription like I do.  I'm waiting until my LINK/SUPERPEDESTRIAN subscription is over to switch over to Hoppy.
